Read MoreKeeping on top of your books is one of those things that's easy to let slip when you're busy running a business. But when your financial records are up to date and working properly, they become genuinely useful — not just a compliance exercise, but a real-time picture of how your business is performing.
At Facts & Figures, we offer bookkeeping services for small businesses, sole traders, and owner-managed companies across Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Scotland. Whether you want to hand everything over to us or simply have someone reliable to check and process your records regularly, we'll build an arrangement that fits the way you work.
Bookkeeping that works around you
Our bookkeeping service essentially replaces the need for you to process some or all of your financial transactions yourself. We'll work with the system you already have in place - or recommend a more suitable alternative if what you're using isn't quite right for your business.
Where possible, we use technology to make sure your paperwork and transactions reach us automatically. Bank feeds, receipt capture through Dext, and cloud accounting software like Xero all mean that the manual effort on your side is kept to a minimum. We are Xero Gold Partners, which means we know the platform thoroughly and can get you set up correctly from the start - or pick up where you left off if you're already using it.
The result is a set of books that are accurate, up to date, and ready to work with at any point - not just at year end.
Reporting on what actually matters to your business
Once your bookkeeping is running smoothly, the next step is making sure you're getting useful information out of it. Every business has a slightly different set of numbers that matter most - whether that's your gross margin, your debtor days, your monthly payroll cost as a percentage of turnover, or simply whether you're on track against last year.
We can tailor a reporting package around the metrics that are most relevant to you, and make sure you're getting that information regularly and in a format that actually makes sense. Not a dense spreadsheet that gets filed away unread, but a clear summary of where your business stands and what it's telling you.
Management accounts for growing businesses
For businesses that need a more structured and regular financial picture, we prepare management accounts on a monthly or quarterly basis. These go beyond a simple bookkeeping summary - they include a full profit and loss statement, balance sheet and commentary on anything significant, giving you the kind of visibility that lets you make confident decisions about hiring, investment, and growth.
Management accounts are also increasingly expected by banks and lenders as part of any facility review or funding application. Having them prepared regularly by a qualified accountant means you're always ready for that conversation, rather than scrambling to pull figures together at short notice.
We prepare management accounts for businesses across Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Scotland - working in person from our two offices or entirely online, depending on what suits you best.
Making Tax Digital - are you ready?
If you're a sole trader or landlord with income above £50,000, Making Tax Digital for Income Tax applies to you from April 2026. Clean, cloud-based bookkeeping is the foundation of MTD compliance - and if your records are already running through Xero or a compatible platform, the transition is straightforward. If they're not, now is a good time to get that sorted.
Thinking of switching accountant?
If your accounts are currently prepared by someone you rarely hear from, or you are not confident everything is being handled as thoroughly as it should be, switching is simpler than most people expect. Find out how moving to Facts & Figures works.
